Within
weeks of moving in to her new home Jane's house was infested
with plaster beetles. The beetles live in damp, humid conditions
and feed on mould growth. The developers advice was to spray
them with fly spray - when Jane called us in, she was using
up to 10 cans a week.
|
When we inspected the property we discovered that
the infestation was due to a damp problem in the kitchen and bedrooms.
As part of our customer service we pursued the matter with the developer
to provide a more satisfactory response than the advice of using
fly spray.
Our Head Office team asked them to re-attend the
property to try and eradicate the plaster beetle infestation. Because
the situation was not resolved as quickly as it should have been
we then took her case to the NHBC to provide resolution on the matter.
The NHBC attended the property in January. At
this stage our client had been using dehumidifiers in her home to
eradicate the damp problem. The NHBC resolution report states "If
the property is used normally, the use of a dehumidifier should
be unnecessary. As the infestation of beetles appears to have been
eradicated and there is no evidence of dampness, no further evidence
is necessary."
We find the comments from the developer and the
NHBC to be unhelpful and unsatisfactory and our client is now considering
how she wishes to pursue this situation. The NHBC resolution implies
that our client is not using her property 'normally' - we would
ask how 'normal' is it to be infested with beetles that thrive on
damp in a home that is a few months old?
